A seal and its escape
A heavy geometric shape holds the centre of Rapture while its surroundings appear to dissolve. In some editions the shape remains a solid emblem; in others it becomes a loose accumulation of points or a folded structure of coloured tiles. The image preserves enough order to suggest a seal, yet gives that order a turbulent outer life.123
Thomas Lin Pedersen describes the series as invented iconography for a mystical religion, with magical seals releasing more power than they can contain. The thousand-edition Art Blocks Factory project was released on August 23, 2021. Its theatrical premise gives a common frame to images that vary substantially in colour, geometry and surface treatment.4
The AB5D-held edition 48 makes a useful opening example. A thick purple square surrounds an empty centre, while violet currents spread through a salmon ground. Its straight edges remain strongly legible beside the curled and softened boundaries of the surrounding flow. A fresh check of the complete three-wallet AB5D profile and the token's indexed owner confirmed the holding at the research cutoff.56
The artist dossier provides broader context. This account concentrates on the particular system behind Rapture: how a compact set of shapes becomes a dense image, how the browser stages that transformation, and what the surviving release records actually establish.
A return to an earlier flow
Pedersen's project account places Rapture's beginnings in Genesis, developed in 2019, followed by further explorations in Phases, Storms and Prism. An early Rapture render closely recalled Genesis, but he moved away from making the new series simply a tribute to the older one. He connects its religious atmosphere to church glass mosaics and gives its six principal colours a fictional association with crystals. The ambition was a coherent series of uncurated outputs, rather than a sequence selected individually afterward.7
The separate Genesis account explains the earlier transition more precisely. After a break from generative art, Pedersen became interested in curl noise and built the ambient package to work with noise in R. Polygon vertices that had previously been driven by particle interactions were now pushed through a flow. Colour also changed the work's character. This is a documented technical and aesthetic lineage; it does not make the R-based predecessor identical to Rapture's browser program.8
Another earlier series, Emergence, helps clarify the role of geometry in his practice. Its artist statement describes shapes appearing from primordial clouds and explains that the apparent depth comes from layered thresholded noise rather than a genuinely three-dimensional scene.9 That is a comparison within the artist's work, not a claim that Rapture uses Emergence's exact cloud algorithm.
Rapture brings the emblem and the disturbance into especially close contact. Its clean shapes do not merely float over an unrelated decorative background. The full script begins with those shapes and deforms their boundaries. The surrounding complexity can therefore be read as something the emblem has generated or shed. This makes the narrative of containment visible without requiring the viewer to memorize the fictional feature names.
Keeping the history of a boundary
The complete artist program retrieved from the official index contains 12,585 UTF-8 bytes. It was read in full, its digest retained, and its identity checked against project 141 and the exact Ethereum contract. The runtime is recorded as p5@1.0.0. The source is compact and minified; the present explanation follows its operations rather than treating its short variable names as meaningful descriptions.10
Four eight-character chunks from the first half of the token hash initialize a four-word random state. A shift-and-XOR update produces the values used for parameter choices. A weighted selection function can choose without replacement, which matters for colour order and combinations. The script derives noise seeds and selects the drawing mode, scale, shape family, rotation and other settings from that stream.10
The starting geometry includes square and circular families: single shapes with holes, nested shapes, separated segments, groups and paired arrangements. Some outputs combine circular and square structures side by side. The canvas can be square or use a landscape or portrait ratio close to the square root of two. Browser dimensions and device pixel ratio determine the rendering resolution while the geometry is transformed from a common internal coordinate system.10
The polygon class stores an ordered boundary as points. It can rotate, scale, copy, add intermediate points and remove points that are too close together. A recursive cubic B-spline evaluator also makes smooth sampling along the boundary available to several drawing modes. The visual process thus begins with explicit contours, rather than a photograph, imported texture or collection of unrelated brush marks.10
Two seeded fields drive displacement. One branch uses p5 noise with four octaves; another computes distances to pseudorandom feature points across neighbouring cells and combines three scales. The displacement function estimates derivatives by sampling nearby positions, arranging the results into a curling vector. Repeatedly adding that vector to each boundary point stretches and folds the contour.10
The process preserves copies of successive deformations. It computes ten stored stages per scheduled batch, with four point updates within each stage. Depending on the selected parameters, it accumulates hundreds of stages before drawing the final result. In a branch that needs additional detail, it inserts points when neighbouring vertices separate, subject to a point-count condition. The outer background boundary is treated differently and does not receive that same adaptive subdivision.10
The final image is drawn from the stored history, working backward through deformation stages. That order lets earlier, more recognizable geometry sit over the more dispersed traces. Rendering choices include filled areas between contours, circles at vertices, spaced spline outlines, short crosswise marks, sampled circles and tiles spanning multiple stages. The tile mode is constrained to the alternative field branch. These choices change the apparent material of the same underlying movement: ribbon, interference, dust or facets.10
Colour is also calculated over the deformation history. The program defines six chromatic families plus pale and dark endpoints, rearranges them according to seeded choices and interpolates through conversion matrices using cube roots and cubes. Opacity changes with position through the sequence. Colour is therefore attached to a stage and a rendering operation, not merely assigned once to a finished shape.10
The loading sequence explains an important display distinction. The script creates two canvases and a short repeating CSS shake animation. A simple seal is shown while the batches calculate. Once computation finishes, the temporary canvas is removed and the detailed image is painted. Reloading edition 48 exposed the plain purple square before the full surrounding flow returned. Its completed composition remained stable across observations.106
There is no ongoing animation loop after completion, and the artist program contains no audio or pointer and keyboard controls. The shaking seal is a computational waiting state, not evidence that the final image continually evolves. A static archive image can faithfully show the completed work, while a link to the original preserves access to its loading presentation. The artist's separate display utilities should not be confused with controls implemented in this token script.10
A short main mint after an earlier token
The first indexed token was minted on August 16, 2021 at 13:57:54 UTC. Activation is recorded on August 19 at 20:30:57 UTC, and the official collection states an August 23 release. Those three dates identify different stages rather than competing answers to one question.104
All one thousand indexed mint records were inspected. One belongs to August 16 and the remaining 999 to August 23. Edition one is timestamped 19:00:54 UTC; edition 999 is timestamped 19:06:10. The interval between the first and last main-day records is five minutes and sixteen seconds. An inspected original opening announcement was not recovered, so that calculation is a mint-record span, not a verified duration measured from an advertised start.10
The first main-day transaction minted a single token for 2 ETH. The final transaction minted a single token for 1.8 ETH. Their network fees were additional. These transactions establish a price difference during the main mint, but do not establish a complete announced reduction schedule, resting price or the terms of the earlier allocation.1112 The current index reports one thousand invocations and a maximum of one thousand; it does not by itself recover the original cap-setting history.10
The project statement pledges twenty-five percent of proceeds toward preservation of the Bigai rainforest in Ecuador through Randers Rainforest Wildlife Foundation.4 A September 9, 2021 Art Blocks report lists $1,440,000 for that foundation through Rapture. The report explicitly mixes artist statements, funds set aside and pledge calculations, and treats its totals as approximate. That figure should remain a contemporary reported contribution rather than a recipient-reconciled payment claim.13
The image, the program and the print
The project record reports CC BY-NC 4.0 for the artwork, with no separate terms URL in its licence-link field. The corresponding Creative Commons text permits noncommercial sharing and adaptation subject to its conditions. Attribution must retain supplied creator and licence information, identify modifications and link to the material where practicable. The licence does not imply endorsement.1014
The archive display is a faithful, attributed image of edition 48 with links to the token, original renderer and licence. Its caption identifies Thomas Lin Pedersen and the collection. AB5D's original critical prose can be CC0 without changing the artwork's licence. The fact that a linked wallet owns the token does not transfer the artist's copyright.
Pedersen's project page also describes a separate signed-print offer for token owners, limited to one print per edition. That specific physical offer should not be expanded into a general commercial reproduction grant, and this research did not verify present ordering availability or whether edition 48's print had been claimed.7
The artist code has no distinct software-licence notice establishing a general reuse grant in the inspected text. p5.js 1.0.0 has its own LGPL-2.1 licence. The library's terms govern that dependency; they do not automatically relicense the entire artist program or generated artwork. Publicly inspectable source and a labelled artwork licence are useful evidence, but they remain separate from an explicit source-code licence.1015
Five kinds of containment

Five original renderers were viewed directly after their token identities were checked. Four were early discovery candidates; edition 48 was added because its current indexed owner matched the freshly inspected AB5D wallet set. The sample demonstrates differences without claiming to measure their frequency across the full edition.

Edition zero, token 141000000, centres a broad yellow ring on a muted pink-purple ground. Fine outlined folds escape around its upper and lower edges and remain visible within the opening. Pale drapery-like forms gather along the image boundary. The flat yellow mass is so continuous that its curled surroundings read as an active fringe around a stable sign.1

Edition one, token 141000001, splits a pale circular emblem into two halves separated by a vertical gap. Green currents gather at left and blue at right, with dark grey and pale folded forms around the border. The gap allows the surrounding turbulence to pass visually through the symbol, weakening the distinction between inside and outside.16

Edition ten, token 141000010, gives the ring a granular surface. Many blue and pale circular marks accumulate around a dark opening, with a smaller irregular concentration near the centre. The outer field remains smoky and angular. Here the emblem feels assembled from particles, making its boundary less absolute than the solid ring in edition zero.2

Edition twenty, token 141000020, is dominated by coral-red folds divided into small quadrilateral facets. Long sheets flare toward the edges around a dark, irregular ring. Pale tiles catch the eye like illuminated surfaces, although the script does not construct a physical object or calculate a photographed light source. The apparent depth is a reading of layered geometry and colour.3
Edition 48, token 141000048, is the collection header. Its purple square has a broad rectangular opening through which salmon and violet currents remain visible. The same flow extends above and below the square, joining inner and outer regions. Compared with the faceted edition twenty, its soft transitions put greater emphasis on the contrast between a clean emblem and a fluid atmosphere.6
The original shape survives the calculation
Rapture's central achievement is to make a process remain readable in its result. The viewer does not need to see each computational stage to recognize the relationship between a simple boundary and its increasingly elaborate distortions. The finished image holds the clean form and the history of its disturbance together.
Its rendering modes give that relationship several material readings without replacing the underlying system. A seal can appear poured, dotted, lined or tiled. This variety makes the series more than a palette exercise: it changes how firmly a shape seems to occupy space and how easily it seems capable of escaping its limits.
Questions still requiring resolution are:
- Which original announcement establishes the public opening and complete price schedule?
- What explains the early allocation and original cap-setting history?
- Can recipient records reconcile the reported charitable contribution?
- What separate licence governs reuse of the artist program?
