Holger Lippmann’s practice occupies a productive interval between painting and computation. Born in Mittweida in 1960, he studied sculpture at the Dresden Art Academy from 1985 to 1990 and continued there as a master student. Subsequent periods in Paris and New York expanded this studio education into an encounter with computer graphics.1 During his New York years, projected fractal animations and electronic music prompted him to reconsider the computer as an artistic medium, leading to an internship in a computer-art department and, eventually, a sustained engagement with programming.2
This trajectory matters because Lippmann did not approach code as a neutral production shortcut. His work emerged from an established visual-art practice and retained painting’s concerns with composition, color, surface, and selection. A 2013 profile describes his generative images as technological structures that also recall quilts, grain, and natural landscapes, while identifying Processing as a central tool in his mature practice.3 The result is less a rejection of painting than an effort to relocate painterly decision-making inside an executable system.
From sculpture to generative painting
Lippmann’s transition developed alongside Berlin’s electronic-music culture and the expanding field of digital art. His exhibition history includes early presentations at Art Basel, solo exhibitions at DAM Berlin, and participation in festivals and institutional contexts devoted to media art.4 A gallery biography records that he has worked mainly with code since 2008, following earlier study in sculpture, computer art, and multimedia.5
The phrase generative painting offers a useful framework. In a catalogue essay, Wolf Lieser distinguishes manually applied digital tools from systems in which artist-written programs repeatedly produce images within predefined boundaries.6 Lippmann’s authorship therefore resides in several connected acts: constructing rules, calibrating variation, running the system, and judging its outputs. His own account emphasizes precisely this iterative rhythm, describing programs that generate images, undergo alteration, and generate again, with subjective selection remaining decisive.2
This method accommodates both formal economy and visual abundance. Lippmann has identified recurring families of motifs across his coded work, including land and wave, grid and structure, circle and round, and tree and flower.2 UNPAINTED similarly characterizes his landscapes and recursive trees as refinements of minimal code structures, often informed by Perlin noise and observation of nature.7 Such systems convert mathematical organization into textures that remain optically unstable: orderly at one scale, atmospheric at another.
WaVyScApE
WaVyScApE extends the long-running land-and-wave strand of Lippmann’s practice into an Art Blocks collection of exactly 315 editions.8 Across the series, layered bands and chromatic passages suggest currents, topographies, sediment, or folded fabric without settling into literal depiction. The mixed capitalization of the title reinforces this oscillation between pattern and landscape, while each output demonstrates how a shared algorithm can sustain marked differences in density, palette, and directional movement.
The collection is best understood in relation to Lippmann’s earlier NoiseScape and landscape works, where coded structures produce effects associated with brushwork and natural terrain. A contemporary gallery entry for NoiseScape situates that series within his digital-art practice,9 while documentation of the related noiseWave project identifies it as generative painting made with Processing and records its 2013 installation context.10 WaVyScApE sharpens those concerns for an edition-based, tokenized setting. Its 315 works are neither reproductions of a single image nor arbitrary variations. Together they expose the range of a deliberately bounded visual instrument.

A durable digital vocabulary
Lippmann’s importance rests in the continuity of his inquiry across changing technical settings. Printed pigment works, screen-based animations, installations, web projects, and blockchain editions all emerge from a consistent proposition: code can behave like a studio medium. Press coverage of his 2013 DATA-DADA exhibition connected his sculptural education and early computer-art experience to a later solo presentation of digital work.11 An earlier account of DAM Berlin likewise placed his animated and printed images within the developing market and exhibition culture for digital fine art.12
WaVyScApE makes that continuity especially legible. Its wave-like fields carry the memory of landscape painting, the pulse of electronic music, and the repeatable logic of software. Yet the collection’s strongest outputs resist functioning as demonstrations of technique. They retain ambiguity, atmosphere, and compositional tension, qualities that allow the algorithm to be encountered not merely as machinery, but as a practiced way of seeing.
