Kazuhiro Tanimoto approaches code with the sensibility of a materials researcher. Born in Kanagawa in 1983, he holds a doctorate in engineering and has worked in functional-materials research.1 His parallel artistic practice is not simply an application of scientific imagery. It treats an algorithm as a material whose behavior must be observed, tested, and refined. In his account of becoming an artist, childhood collections of glass, stones, and plastic sit beside experiments with hydrogen and copper-sulfate crystals. At university he chose chemistry over design and information engineering, yet continued making software, electronics, and images.2
That history matters because Tanimoto’s works do not present computation as frictionless abstraction. They are preoccupied with substrates, execution environments, deterioration, and transformation. A program is never merely an idea. It must inhabit hardware, consume resources, and unfold in time. Across GHOST IN THE CODE, Wabi Sabi, and Memories of Digital Data, the code stored on-chain becomes a compact set of conditions from which mutable faces, brushstrokes, waves, clouds, and ruins arise.
Tanimoto’s central medium is not the finished image but the behavior of a system under changing conditions.
From molecules to executable images
Tanimoto’s early installation Light-bending material joined a transparent solid material, laser light, a motor, and Arduino control. It received a Jury Selection in the Art Division of the 21st Japan Media Arts Festival, where it was classified as a media installation.3 The work established a durable principle: physical substances and programmed operations can be designed together, with neither reduced to an illustration of the other.
His later generative practice carries this laboratory disposition into the browser. Months of trial, error, observation, and revision precede the release of a system. Tanimoto has compared the creative work of scientists and artists, noting that each studies inherited theories and combines ideas to materialize something new.2 The analogy clarifies his authorship. He does not withdraw in favor of autonomous machinery. He designs constraints, evaluates behaviors, and cultivates a field of possible events.
This position became especially explicit in Rain Blooms in 2026. Built around an original cellular automaton developed over two years, the audiovisual work updates cells through local relations rather than imposing a predetermined final composition. Multiple species, vitality values, and interactions generate evolving visual and sonic conditions.4 Contemporary criticism has consequently described his cellular automata as more than interchangeable visual effects, emphasizing their proximity to sustained materials research.5
The portrait as an executing code
GHOST IN THE CODE was released by Art Blocks on July 8, 2022, as 404 unique artworks.6 Its compact program generates changing human faces whose personality is determined from the token hash. Tanimoto describes the result as a living portrait, not a fixed representation: expressions continue to shift in real time, while differences in background, color, texture, and facial structure enlarge the system’s expressive range.7
The work begins from a speculative analogy between biological and programming languages. If DNA encodes bodily differences, Tanimoto asks whether personality and affect might also be evoked through a comparatively small computational description. The project’s title makes this proposition spectral. Minting executes the code, allowing a face to appear as an enduring but unsettled presence within a network.
This is not a claim that a generated portrait possesses consciousness. Rather, the work tests how little information viewers require before attributing individuality, mood, or interiority to an image. Its faces move beyond a simple catalogue of joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure. They appear hesitant, watchful, wounded, amused, or opaque because interpretation exceeds the parameters that generated them. The ghost resides in that gap between deterministic procedure and human recognition.

Imperfection as participation
Released on November 7, 2022, Wabi Sabi comprises 205 unique artworks.8 The project translates motifs of Japanese calligraphy into generative brushstrokes marked by bleeding, scratching, splattering, and conspicuous blank space. Curves meet straighter passages, strong gestures meet slight ones, and apparent depth can emerge from digitally controlled focus. These are not simulations seeking physical correctness. Tanimoto uses computational impossibilities, including multicolored ink that bleeds consistently in one direction, to establish a digitally native kind of brushwork.9
The project’s most consequential feature is its editability. Viewers can alter a composition, leaving the work structurally unfinished. Participation therefore belongs to its argument rather than functioning as an accessory. Tanimoto connects this openness to wabi-sabi as an acceptance of imperfection and incompletion. The work places a stable on-chain program in productive tension with an image that refuses final form.
Blank space is equally active. Where much computational art displays density as proof of technical power, Wabi Sabi permits absence to organize the composition. The unmarked field slows perception and makes each gesture contingent. What persists is not one canonical surface, but a rule-bound capacity for revision.

Data after permanence
Memories of Digital Data, an Art Blocks Curated release of May 12, 2023, consists of 450 unique artworks.10 It is the fullest synthesis of Tanimoto’s material and computational concerns. Blocks resemble a submerged city, while detached fragments of data gather into clouds and wave-like formations. Rectangles evoke pixels, shifts in scale produce depth, and dispersions of position and color suggest a world undergoing degradation.11
The project grew from personal experiences of technological loss: deteriorated floppy disks, failed hard drives, accidental formatting, vanished websites, and files stranded by obsolete software or operating systems. These episodes puncture the familiar promise that digital information can be preserved without limit. Tanimoto stresses that cloud data still occupy physical servers and that blockchain persistence likewise depends on infrastructure, energy, incentives, and continuing social maintenance.11
Sound deepens this meditation. Clicking the work activates waves synthesized from white noise, avoiding the storage of a large prerecorded audio file. The sea is both subject and method: visual data move like water, while generated sound supplies an environment for sustained viewing. In the artist’s recollection, seascapes suggested a world after human ruin, one in which waves might outlast the civilization that recorded them.11
Yet the series does not treat loss as a purely catastrophic event. Unreadable files remain as memories, altered by nostalgia and by the mind’s tendency to retain happiness after the sharpness of loss recedes. In 2025 Rhizome ArtBase added Memories of Digital Data to an archive of born-digital art, a fitting institutional context for a work that asks what preservation can actually promise.12 Its achievement is to make fragility experiential. The animation never settles into a commemorative still. It continues to shimmer, break, and reform.

Systems that remain alive
Seen together, the three AB[500] projects form a precise progression. GHOST IN THE CODE locates mutable identity inside a concise executable system. Wabi Sabi gives the viewer access to incompletion as a generative condition. Memories of Digital Data expands mutability into an environmental account of technological decay. Each challenges the assumption that digital art should culminate in a stable image.
Tanimoto’s systems instead remain temporally active. Faces change expression, brushwork accepts intervention, and data drift through an audiovisual ruin. Their on-chain status offers continuity, but never an escape from material dependency. This tension gives the practice its institutional significance. Code may preserve a rule, yet every encounter still requires a machine, an interface, and a culture willing to execute it. Tanimoto’s art inhabits that conditional space, where preservation means maintaining the possibility of change.
