Generated Space, Golid's long-running online studio, describes a year-long attempt to make computers do unexpected things. The archive moves from organic flow fields and particle systems to rigid fractals, cellular automata, and grammar-based forms. Its code is public, and many sketches remain interactive. A viewer can operate the system rather than encounter only a selected result.1

That openness is inseparable from the work's intellectual origin. Golid studied cognitive science and later specialised in computer science. He initially used visualisation to understand algorithms, then gradually allowed correctness to give way to aesthetic curiosity. The underlying process remained the subject, but colour, composition, and irregularity turned explanation into expression.2

The image is not a destination specified in advance. It is a reading of the system that produced it.

Archetype: repetition against disorder

Archetype, released through Art Blocks Curated in February 2021, begins with rectangle partitioning. The program divides a rectangle into sections, overlays each section with a grid, then places a second partition inside every cell. Within a section, that inner partition repeats. A locally irregular shape becomes a motif; repetition converts accident into intention.3

The series' 600 outputs distribute six explicit properties: frame, shading, scene, palette, colouring strategy, and layout. Layout names the core balance directly. Order uses one large section and emphasises repeated pattern. Chaos breaks the plane into many smaller sections. Balance occupies the interval between them. Scene can keep the construction flat, fold it into a corner, or resolve it as a complete cube.4

These categories explain the generator without exhausting it. Collectors identified further traits through close comparison: monochrome works, long cells, frameless compositions, and rare cubic structures. Curated's thirty-work study treats collecting as an attempt to hold the shape of the algorithm, not merely its most immediately attractive outputs.5

Archetype #397, one of ten Cube outputs, makes the series' conceptual mechanism unusually visible. Its partitions appear to occupy three-dimensional space while remaining generated from the same rule system as the flat works. Sotheby's connected this construction to rule-based conceptual practice, especially Sol LeWitt's systematic exploration of incomplete open cubes.6

Colour after structure

Golid's palettes are often mistaken for another automated layer. They are instead assembled manually. He gathers colour relationships from photography, illustration, film, and design, stores them in the open-source chromotome library, then tests them against a particular system. A palette that clarifies one structure can obscure another. Colour is therefore delayed until the generative mechanism has begun to reveal what it needs.7

This order of operations matters. Golid begins by building general tools for structure, adds parameters that expose unexpected behaviours, and uses a rough renderer to inspect them. Paper Armada: precision made playful

Paper Armada followed through Art Blocks Playground in March 2021. Its 3,000 outputs are perfectly symmetric and imperfectly drawn. Each resembles a spacecraft diagram, folded toy, crest, mask, or imagined machine assembled from coloured paper. The title turns the whole edition into a fleet while keeping every vessel visibly individual.8

Where Archetype asks how repeated partitions stabilise chaos, Paper Armada asks how symmetry and imprecision can coexist. Bilateral organisation gives each output an emblematic centre. Wavering edges and dense appendages prevent the form from becoming sterile. The craft metaphor makes algorithmic construction feel tactile, as if the screen were showing a set of instructions for an object that might be cut, folded, and held.9

The large edition is central to that reading. One ship is an illustration; three thousand form a taxonomy. Differences in silhouette, palette, density, and implied function invite the viewer to compare families. The work demonstrates Golid's belief that a generative system is expressed through variation between outputs, not only through a single selected image.

Open code, open looking

Golid treats access to the mechanism as a form of invitation. Generated Space lets visitors adjust systems in the browser; GitHub exposes the code beneath them; chromotome allows other artists to work with his palette archive. The point is not that code itself automatically becomes art. It is that a system can be understood, modified, and shared without losing the distinct judgement of its maker.10

Crosshatch Automata makes this pedagogy visible. Standard cellular automata are often represented as black and white squares. Golid substitutes lines in four orientations, assigns a rule to each direction, then uses the intersections as dividers for colour. The work begins with a familiar computational model and changes its visual vocabulary until the structure can be seen differently.

This is an important contribution to the culture around generative art. Open tools distribute technique, but they also distribute curiosity. A visitor who changes a parameter becomes attentive to cause and effect. The system ceases to be a sealed image machine and becomes a space for learning how form emerges.

From plane to volume

Golid's later work extends the same questions across media and dimensions. Curvescape VII sends particles through a noise flow field, producing lines that resemble contour maps, pencil marks, or charcoal. MoCDA reads its apparent handwork against the precision of its computational origin.11

Expanse divides a plane into a grid and extrudes its cells into cuboids. Change of Basis develops partitioning more radically: a cube is recursively subdivided, then sliced along different planes. Simple rules yield structures that can suggest cathedrals, machinery, or impossible architecture. Eight prints and their on-chain counterparts translate those sections into saturated linework.12

Orbifold approaches planar symmetries through colourful maze-like structures. A mathematically exact classification meets dimensional play and an imperfect grid. Across these projects, geometry is never merely clean. Golid introduces noise, hand-drawn edges, colour clashes, or false depth so that the rule remains active rather than resolved.

Institutional afterlives

In 2021 selected Archetype works appeared on the ZKM Cube as part of CryptoArt: It's Not About Money. The exhibition placed blockchain-based work within a media-art institution already committed to the histories of computation and electronic culture.13

That movement from browser sketch to on-chain series, museum display, auction catalogue, and authorised print does not replace the original system. It reveals its portability. Golid's work can occupy a web page, a token renderer, a paper edition, or an architectural screen because the underlying rules are stable enough to survive translation.

Verse describes the practice through an equilibrium of chaos and intentionality, structural complexity and visual clarity. That formulation also explains why Golid's work persists across platforms. A recognisable style emerges not from one repeated image but from a repeated way of asking what an algorithm can make visible.14

Why he belongs in the AB[500]

Kjetil Golid belongs in the AB[500] because Archetype is one of the clearest demonstrations of long-form generative art as the collection of a system. Its 600 outputs do not merely vary colour around a fixed design. They move between flat pattern, corner, and cube; order, balance, and chaos; dense fragmentation and broad repetition. The edition gives viewers enough evidence to infer the procedure while preserving surprise.

Paper Armada adds another model. Its 3,000 works use symmetry and deliberate imprecision to turn procedural drawing into a fictional material culture. Together, the projects show that technical legibility need not produce coldness. Systems can be rigorous, generous, playful, and strange at once.

The canon also requires the ecology around the works: an artist site full of operable sketches, public source code, shared colour tools, essays that explain the method, and physical translations that keep the algorithm visible. Golid's practice makes computation available for inspection without reducing art to instruction. The rules are there to be seen. What they will produce remains open.
