Monica Rizzolli arrived at generative art through drawing and painting. After studying fine art at São Paulo State University, she moved to Kassel in 2012 and began teaching herself creative programming. Code offered a way to represent landscapes not as fixed views but as changing systems: growth, weather, colour, and perspective could be related through parameters and allowed to develop together.1
Her first generative artwork was presented in 2015 after a MAK-Schindler research grant in Los Angeles. Back in Brazil, she helped build the social infrastructure around creative code, co-creating Noite de Processing at Garoa Hacker Clube and participating in Processing Community Day Brazil. She also taught Processing and creative coding while struggling to have her own software practice recognised as art.2
Nature is not a catalogue of motifs. It is a system of rules that produces difference without abandoning relation.
Learning from the landscape
Flowers, water, seasons, and patterned surfaces appear throughout Rizzolli's practice, but observation does not lead her toward botanical illustration alone. She is interested in the hidden structures that allow natural forms to repeat and diverge. A plant establishes a rhythm through leaves, petals, and branching, yet no two specimens are identical. Generative code makes that balance between rule and variation explicit.
Her visual sources cross media and geography. Rizzolli has named concrete art, ukiyo-e prints, botanical illustration, textiles, and porcelain surface design as formative. Earlier projects were also shaped by landscape research during residencies in France and Los Angeles. These influences meet in work that is richly decorative without treating decoration as secondary: pattern is evidence of an organising system.3
The move from paint to software did not replace handwork. Sketching remains a way to discover forms, and later programs extend those drawn ideas into families. The artist designs the grammar, observes what it produces, and returns to adjust it. Code is neither an autonomous nature nor a tool that simply executes a finished image. It is a site of negotiation between intention and emergence.
Fragments of an Infinite Field
Released on Art Blocks in September 2021, Fragments of an Infinite Field comprises 1,024 unique environments. Each work grows from a shared system of branching forms, flowers, foliage, colour, and atmospheric events. The title holds the project's central paradox. The field suggests continuity without boundary; the token cuts out one bounded fragment.4

The season assigned to a work governs both palette and environmental behaviour. Spring may carry pollen, summer rain, winter snow, and autumn petals or leaves. Floral structures can mutate through changes in filaments, petals, and other components. What appears at first as abundance is therefore legible as consequence: visible differences trace back to conditions in the system.5
Season is more than a trait label. It inserts time into a still output. A winter fragment implies dormancy and recurrence; falling leaves imply a field before and after the captured state. The image does not move, yet it belongs to a cycle. By distributing the seasons across the edition, Rizzolli makes temporal change visible through comparison.

The work between the works
Long-form generative art asks a viewer to move between individual image and population. One Fragment can be judged as a composition, but the algorithm becomes visible only through many. Repeated branches reveal the common grammar; unusual flowers reveal its mutations; seasonal palettes reveal how one parameter can reorganise the entire atmosphere.
Art Blocks' essay on seriality reads four outputs together as winter, summer, spring, and autumn. The set creates a narrative arc that no single token contains. It is completed culturally by collectors and viewers who compare, classify, arrange, and circulate the works. The edition is therefore not a stack of interchangeable images. It is the scale at which the system can be understood.6
This collective scale complicates rarity. A visually uncommon mutation belongs to one token, but its meaning comes from the frequency of forms across all 1,024. The rare work depends on the common ones that establish the norm. Rizzolli's field is distributed among wallets, yet no holder can possess or even easily see the system in total. Each fragment remains autonomous while participating in an ecology larger than ownership.
Plants as memory systems
Rizzolli's later blockchain work deepens the relation between computation and imagined botany. In Tibouchina mutabilis, discussed with LACMA, an artificial plant passes through origin, life, and death. The artist studied L-systems, the recursive formal language developed to model plant growth, then designed parameters capable of generating floral patterns. The difficulty was not finding an equation but making its outputs behave like a convincing family of flowers.7
The work connects a real Brazilian species to migration, memory, and simulated descent. LACMA received the death state through the promised gift of the Cozomo de' Medici Collection. The plant's life is separated across collections, turning stages of one organism into a distributed record.
Underwater similarly imagines one hundred flowers as descendants of ancient Mexican plants, drawing on medieval botanical catalogues and Japanese ukiyo-e prints. Rizzolli does not use computation to reproduce known species more efficiently. She constructs speculative lineages, then asks code to make their internal variation persuasive.8
From the chain to the museum
Fragments quickly moved from collector screens into historical and institutional frames. Phillips included four tokens in its 2022 Ex-Machina history of generative art. The selection displayed season as a group rather than isolating one privileged output.9 In 2025, the Toledo Museum of Art included Rizzolli in Infinite Images: The Art of Algorithms, a multigenerational exhibition connecting contemporary code with concrete, conceptual, and early computer art.
Gazelli Art House's GEN/GEN placed her interactive Dance to forgotten noise beside works by Harold Cohen, Ernest Edmonds, William Latham, Sougwen Chung, Tyler Hobbs, and others. The exhibition's structure rejected a simple pioneer-to-successor story. Different generations shared a concern with how rules, machines, and human judgment collaborate.10
These contexts make clear that Rizzolli's botanical imagery is not an ornamental exception within generative art. It is a rigorous answer to one of the field's central questions: how can a finite set of instructions produce a world that feels internally alive?
Why she belongs in the AB[500]
Monica Rizzolli belongs in the AB[500] because Fragments of an Infinite Field demonstrates long-form generation at both visual and conceptual scale. Its 1,024 outputs are sufficiently varied to sustain individual attention, sufficiently related to reveal a common grammar, and sufficiently structured for seasons and mutations to create meaning across the set.
The project also broadens the canon's account of what computation can picture. Its subject is not the machine, the grid, or digital space. It is a landscape governed by weather, recurrence, growth, and decay. Yet nature is not opposed to code. Both become systems through which variation unfolds inside constraint.
The fragment is the correct unit for this argument. A collector holds one bounded image. The algorithm implies the field beyond it. The canon needs both: the work that can be owned and the larger ecology that cannot.
