Philip Bell approaches generative art through the joined disciplines of graphic design, printmaking, and software engineering. His practice is not simply a digital simulation of printed matter. Instead, code becomes a way to test the structural conditions of print: registration, repetition, pressure, modular form, restricted palettes, and the productive irregularity of a process that never yields two perfectly identical impressions. A biographical profile by Le Random identifies Bell as a Chicago-based generative artist and graphic designer, educated at the Maryland Institute College of Art, whose professional design experience preceded long-form releases on fx(hash) and Art Blocks.1
Bell’s earlier projects establish the continuity of this approach. In his account of PictoOptic, published in 2017, he describes an application that generated responsive compositions from pictograms returned by The Noun Project API. The project joined programming, interaction design, animation, typography, and poster-like composition, while allowing a viewer’s search term to initiate the visual result.2 This emphasis on a designed system, open to many outcomes yet governed by a clear visual identity, anticipates the logic of his later blockchain-based work.
The printed surface as a system
Bell’s work treats print history as operational knowledge. In the artist note for Selvedge, he calls the series an ode to his print background and foregrounds process flaws such as offsetting and uneven ink coverage.3 Those qualities matter because they interrupt the frictionless polish normally associated with computational images. They also position variation as something perceived through texture, overlap, and imperfect repetition, rather than through complexity alone.
The relation between physical procedure and programmable transformation remains visible in risomotion. Bell describes that project as a method for combining JavaScript-generated animation with Risograph printing.4 A documented use of the tool shows a practical loop in which animation frames are arranged for printing, scanned after physical production, and recompiled as a GIF or video.5 Here the printed sheet is not a final translation of a digital original. It becomes an active stage within the animation pipeline, introducing material evidence that the software can preserve and reorganize.
Bell’s generative systems make the discipline of print visible through repetition, constraint, and controlled imperfection.
Staccato
Released by Art Blocks on September 16, 2022, Staccato is a collection of 200 unique editions.6 The official collection description frames the work through letterpress constraints, including a limited supply of type, rectangular impression areas, the physical character of ink, and the compositional consequences of overlapping forms.6 Its title suggests short, separated articulations, an apt analogy for images built from discrete blocks whose intervals and collisions establish visual rhythm.
Across the collection, Bell’s geometric vocabulary remains direct: bars, blocks, fields, and layered color occupy a shallow pictorial space. The system’s interest lies in how these elementary components accumulate. Some outputs feel compact and architectural, while others disperse their elements across open ground. Overprinting creates darker junctions and implied depth, making color operate simultaneously as surface and record of sequence. The resulting images recall modernist print design without reducing that history to a fixed style.

Constraint and authorship
Staccato clarifies how Bell locates authorship in the construction of a visual grammar. The individual image is one realization of rules that coordinate form, color, density, and overlap. Yet the collection does not present rules as neutral machinery. Its parameters carry the memory of letterpress equipment, typographic inventory, and ink transferred under pressure. The code therefore functions as a historically informed studio apparatus.
This continuity also explains why Bell’s outputs retain a strong graphic identity despite their variation. His archived projects encompass programming, visual design, animation, illustration, paper engineering, and letterpress.7 Within Staccato, those fields converge in a concise proposition: computation can extend the lessons of print without erasing their limits. The collection’s 200 editions offer not an exhaustive survey of possible geometry, but a controlled study of how a small vocabulary acquires cadence through repeated execution.
